Task force

The current focus is to catalog data as it is found within the community. The philosophy of the task force is not to propose specific data formats for it is generally believed that ‘de facto’ formats, emphasis on plural, have emerged and new ones are emerging. The emphasis is on the specific data and data types that are found relative to the different types of modelling and experiments within the community. The task force will collect and organise the input from the respective experts, relative to specific experiments and models, and produce a ‘living’ document outlining the state of the art of data within the community and lead the community into the information age of research.

An important goal of the task force is to research the quality and usefulness of the different types of data within the community. Important questions are what data should and can be exchanged either publicly or between collaborators, and what can be the problematic for data exchange. To this end, data is seen to be in two major categories, public/published data and the ‘raw’ data leading up to publication. Raw data is further categorised into two subgroups, raw, unmanipulated or partially manipulated, data or and raw data that is useful for exchange between collaborators within the field. An important aspect in cataloging data is accountability, to track the path flow from raw data to published data with special emphasis on data interdependencies.

Within the Action, the discussion leading to the formation of the task force started with the April 5-6, 2016 Workshop in Naples, Data Collection and Mining toward virtual Chemistry of Smart Energy Carriers (https://www.smartcats.eu/event/wg4wg1/). The purpose of the conference was to establish the ‘state of the art’ of (chemcial/combustion) by have presenters not only within the Action, but also representatives and experts of other communities regarding data publishing and exchange.

As a result of a special session and panel discussion on data exchange,Data Exchange: towards a community standard, within the November 14-16, 2016, 2nd general MC meeting (https://www.smartcats.eu/event/workshop-meeting/), the task force was assembled. As a result of the discussion, a ‘living’, meaning a continually updated, white paper on data exchange has been started. Initial guidelines outlining the focus of the paper were published on the website (https://www.smartcats.eu/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/DataExchange.pdf).

The task force is now active in interviewing the experts of the Action, relative to data of specific modelling techniques and experimental procedures, to catalog the current state of the art and work toward the future of data exchange for the combustion community.
